Handyman in DeWitt, NY

The Town of DeWitt wraps around the eastern edge of Syracuse, taking in the hamlet of DeWitt itself, the village of East Syracuse and Jamesville to the south. It grew quickly after World War II, when Carrier built its large plant near what became Carrier Circle and the new interstates made the east side easy to reach. The result is a town full of solid mid-century homes: ranches, capes and two-story colonials from the 1950s and 1960s along quiet, tree-lined streets near Erie Boulevard and the Jamesville-DeWitt schools, split-levels and larger colonials from the 1970s and later on the hillsides to the south toward Jamesville, and older frame homes from the railroad era in East Syracuse, which grew up around the big rail yard there. Many of these houses are now owned by their second or third families, and they're at the age where the original pieces wear out together: doors that no longer seal, bathrooms from another era, gutters and downspouts on their second or third winter of patching, and wiring for lighting that was never meant for today's needs. Owners here tend to keep their houses in good shape, and a lot of our work in DeWitt is the steady upkeep that keeps it that way.

Erie Boulevard East is DeWitt's main commercial strip, following the route of the old Erie Canal and lined with stores, restaurants and car dealers, and the long-running redevelopment of the former Shoppingtown site sits near its east end. Carrier Circle and Thompson Road anchor the business parks at the northern edge of town, and the I-690 and I-481 interchange makes DeWitt one of the easiest places in the county to reach. To the south, Jamesville has a quieter, rural feel, with Clark Reservation State Park and its glacial plunge-pool lake drawing hikers to the cliffs, and Jamesville Beach on the reservoir busy in summer. Le Moyne College sits on the town's western edge. Butternut Creek runs through the middle of town, and the mature oaks, maples and pines along DeWitt's residential streets look beautiful in fall and fill gutters quickly.

Jobs we handle a lot around DeWitt

DeWitt's mid-century homes keep us busy with doors and hardware: hollow-core interior doors that drag on new flooring, exterior doors whose weatherstripping has flattened, and storm doors that need new closers or sweeps. We replace old bathroom faucets, running toilets and failing shutoff valves, and swap out kitchen faucets and disposals. Many owners call for light fixtures, ceiling fans and smart thermostats, and for TVs mounted over fireplaces in family rooms. Outside, gutters on long ranch rooflines need regular cleaning under all those trees, and the hangers need re-securing after ice season. In the older homes of East Syracuse, the work leans toward plaster, porch railings and windows that have been painted shut. Owners getting ready to sell also bring us punch lists of patching and paint touch-ups ahead of listing photos.

Questions we hear in DeWitt

Can you update the lighting in my 1950s DeWitt ranch?

Yes. Mid-century ranches often have a single ceiling light per room, small closet fixtures and kitchens lit by one fixture in the middle of the ceiling. Our licensed electricians can replace old fixtures with brighter, efficient ones, add dimmers, put a ceiling fan where a light used to be with a fan-rated box behind it, and swap the switches for smart ones if you'd like to control lights from your phone. We check the condition of the old wiring and boxes as we go, since some of these homes have original connections that are seventy years old.

Do you work in East Syracuse and Jamesville too?

Yes. The village of East Syracuse and the hamlet of Jamesville are both part of the Town of DeWitt and well within our service area. The older homes in East Syracuse bring plaster, porch and door work, while the homes around Jamesville and the hills south of Route 173 tend to need gutters, decks and fence repairs. Give us the address and we'll confirm the visit.

Ice builds up along the edge of my DeWitt roof every winter. Can you help?

We can help with the parts that cause it and the damage it leaves. Ice dams form when warm air from the house melts snow on the roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. We clean and re-secure gutters so meltwater can drain, check that bathroom and kitchen fans vent outside instead of into the attic, seal obvious air leaks around attic hatches and fixtures, and repair stained drywall or plaster inside once the leak stops. For major insulation or roofing work, we'll tell you plainly what the next step is.
