Handyman in Camillus, NY

Camillus lies just west of Syracuse, past Solvay and the Fairmount area, along West Genesee Street and the Route 5 corridor. The town takes its name from the old military tract townships of the 1790s, and the small Village of Camillus at its center grew up along Nine Mile Creek and the Erie Canal, later home to the Camillus Cutlery company, which made knives there for more than a century. Today most of the town is suburban. Fairmount, on the eastern edge near the city, filled in during the 1950s and 1960s with capes, ranches and two-story colonials on tidy lots. Farther west, through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, subdivisions spread across the rolling land off Warners Road, Bennetts Corners Road and Newport Road, mostly raised ranches, split-levels and larger colonials, and newer developments continue to go up on the town's western side. The village itself keeps older frame houses and a few nineteenth-century homes close to the creek. With that range of ages, Camillus homeowners call us for very different reasons: original fixtures and tired bathrooms in Fairmount, decks, fences and garages in the newer subdivisions, and plaster and porch work in the village.

West Genesee Street is the main road through town, lined with shops, plazas and the Fairmount Fair shopping center near the city line, and the West Genesee schools anchor much of the community. The Route 5 expressway carries commuters past the village toward Elbridge and Auburn, and Milton Avenue runs through Solvay and the Fairmount area. Camillus Erie Canal Park, with its restored stretch of the old canal, towpath trails and the Sims Store museum, is a favorite for walking and boating, and Nine Mile Creek winds through the town toward Onondaga Lake. The landscape gets hillier and more open to the west, with longer driveways, bigger lots and more exposure to the wind that drives snow across fields in winter, which is hard on fences, gates, storm doors and gutters.

What Camillus neighbors book most

Camillus is a short drive out West Genesee Street or the Route 5 expressway for us, and we work in Fairmount and the newer subdivisions to the west regularly.

Jobs we handle a lot around Camillus

A typical run of Camillus jobs might include re-hanging a storm door that the wind caught and bent, replacing rotted fence posts and gate hardware, cleaning and re-securing gutters on a long colonial roofline, installing ceiling fans in upstairs bedrooms that get warm in July, and setting up a garage with shelving and racks. In Fairmount's 1950s and 1960s homes, we replace old bathroom faucets and toilets, swap original light fixtures, fix sticking interior doors, and patch and paint walls. Decks and vinyl siding in the newer subdivisions grow green on shaded sides and benefit from careful pressure washing in late spring. Families moving in also call us for furniture assembly, TV mounting and childproofing, getting the house set up in a single visit.

Questions we hear in Camillus

My fence in Camillus leans more every spring. Can it be saved?

Often it can. The rolling clay soils in much of Camillus hold water and freeze hard, so posts that weren't set deep enough get pushed up and tipped a little more each winter. We replace the failed posts, setting them below the frost line, straighten and re-fasten the rails and boards, and re-hang the gate so it swings and latches again. If most of the posts have rotted at the ground line, we'll show you why a section-by-section replacement may be the smarter spend.

Can you build out storage in my two-car garage?

Yes. Garages in the newer Camillus subdivisions are usually roomy but empty, and they quickly fill with bikes, lawn equipment, snowblowers and sports gear. We install heavy-duty wall shelving anchored into studs, overhead ceiling racks for bins and seasonal items, slatwall or rail systems for tools, and hooks for bikes and ladders, laid out so both cars still fit and you can get the snowblower out in a hurry.

Do you also work in Solvay and the Fairmount area?

Yes. Solvay and the Fairmount area sit between Syracuse and Camillus, and we pass through them constantly. Solvay's older homes, many built for workers at the old Solvay Process plant, bring plaster, door and plumbing repairs, while Fairmount's postwar houses need fixture updates, gutter work and seasonal maintenance.
